What is Japanese Encephalitis?

JE is a serious viral infection spread by mosquitoes in rural parts of Asia and the Pacific. Most cases are mild, but 1 in 250 infections leads to brain swelling (encephalitis), which can be fatal or cause long-term disability. Children are at higher risk due to developing immune systems.

Does My Child Need the JE Vaccine?

Yes, if your trip includes:

  • Rural areas (farms, rice fields, jungles) in countries like Thailand, Vietnam, or India.
  • Long stays (≥1 month) in regions with active JE transmission.
  • Outdoor activities (camping, hiking, biking) during dusk/dawn when mosquitoes bite.

Not usually needed for:

  • Short city trips (e.g., Bangkok, Tokyo).
  • Travel during dry seasons with fewer mosquitoes.

JE Vaccine for Kids: Age, Dosage & Safety

Age Requirements

  • IXIARO® Vaccine: Safe for children aged 2 months and older.
  • Alternative Vaccines: Some are licensed for ages 12+ months—ask our clinic.

Dosage Schedule

  1. First Dose: Day 0.
  2. Second Dose: 28 days later.
  3. Booster: After 1–2 years if still at risk.

Last-minute trips? A rushed schedule (7 days apart) is possible but less effective.

Most kids experience mild reactions:

  • Sore arm.
  • Low fever.
  • Fatigue (lasts 1–2 days).

Rare: Severe allergic reactions (1 in a million).

A: We use distraction techniques and numbing cream to ease anxiety.

A: The vaccine isn't usually needed, but pack repellent for day trips.

Q: Can babies under 2 months get vaccinated?
A: No—postpone travel or use strict mosquito precautions.

How to Prepare

  1. Book Early – Vaccines need 4+ weeks for full protection.
