Common Travel Vaccines and How Long They Last

Hepatitis A

Protection from the Hepatitis A vaccine lasts for many years after the full two dose course. The first dose starts to work within a couple of weeks, with the second dose given several months later to build longer protection. For most people, this means protection for life, and boosters are not routinely needed for travel.

Hepatitis B

The Hepatitis B vaccine is given in three shots over several months. After the full course, protection lasts for many years and is usually long term. Booster doses are not usually needed for travel in healthy people.

Yellow fever

One dose of yellow fever vaccine provides long lasting protection. It is generally considered to offer protection for life, and most travellers do not need a booster for travel.

Typhoid

There are two vaccines for typhoid. The oral Ty21a vaccine usually protects for about five years, while the injectable Vi polysaccharide vaccine lasts around two to three years. If you remain at risk, your clinician may advise a booster.

Rabies

Rabies vaccination for travellers is usually given as a three dose series. This provides long lasting protection for many years, and boosters may be needed if your risk continues.

Tetanus

Tetanus protection lasts about ten years after a routine booster. If you have a wound and your vaccination is not up to date, a booster may be given.

When You Might Need a Booster: Typical Booster Timelines

Boosters are common if you travel often or if your last dose was a long time ago. Your clinic will check your records and tell you what to top up. For tetanus the booster is generally every ten years; for other vaccines, the need for a booster depends on the vaccine type and your travel plans. If you are visiting high risk areas or staying for a long time, talk to us about boosters.

Factors That Affect Duration:

As people get older or if they have certain health conditions, the protection from vaccines can change. Age, immune system health, liver or kidney health, pregnancy, and the level of risk at your travel destination can all influence how long a vaccine protection lasts. Following the full vaccination schedule and keeping your records up to date are important to make sure you are protected when you travel.

How to Check If Your Vaccines Are Still Valid:

Keep a copy of your vaccination record or card, and carry it when you travel. If you are unsure about your protection, book a check with Aqua Travel Clinic. We can review your records, confirm what is still valid, and arrange any needed boosters to keep you protected on your trip.
