Destination guide

Cuba is a low-risk Caribbean destination for most London travellers: classic Havana, tobacco country in Vinales, the colonial towns of Trinidad and Cienfuegos, plus all-inclusive resorts at Varadero, Cayo Coco and Cayo Santa Maria. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A and Typhoid for most travellers, with Hepatitis B for longer stays or anyone likely to receive medical or dental care abroad.

Yellow Fever is not a risk in Cuba and is not required for entry from the UK. There is no malaria. The bigger mosquito risk is Dengue, which is present year-round and there is no vaccine for it in standard UK practice.

Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC-registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually fit you in same-week and finish your Cuba vaccines in a single short appointment.

Travel vaccines for Cuba, at a glance

Cuba is a low-risk Caribbean destination. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A and Typhoid for most travellers, with Hepatitis B considered for longer stays. Yellow Fever is not a concern. Malaria is not present. The biggest mosquito-borne risk is Dengue, which has no vaccine in standard UK practice, so bite avoidance is the main intervention. Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead can sort the vaccines and travel advice in a single appointment.

Hepatitis A and Typhoid

Both are standard for Cuba travel and can be given together as Viatim (one injection) or separately. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose, and 25 years with a booster. Typhoid protects for around 3 years. These matter because food and water hygiene is variable, particularly in casas particulares, paladares and street food across Havana, Trinidad and the eastern cities.

Hepatitis B

Recommended if you are staying longer than a month, volunteering, working with children, anticipate medical or dental care, or planning tattoos or piercings on the trip. A standard three-dose schedule or accelerated course can be tailored at the consultation.

Dengue and bite avoidance

Dengue is present year-round in Cuba, particularly in urban areas and during the rainy season (May to November). There is no vaccine in standard UK practice for travellers without prior exposure. Prevention is everything: DEET 50 percent day and night (Dengue mosquitoes bite during the day), long sleeves at dawn and dusk, and air-conditioned or screened accommodation where possible.

Practical Cuba tips

Cuban pharmacies can run short of basic supplies. Pack what you might need: paracetamol, ibuprofen, oral rehydration sachets, antihistamines, sun cream, DEET, and any prescription medicines for the full trip plus a few days margin. The pharmacist can run through this list at the appointment.
