Guatemala packs colonial Antigua, the Mayan ruins of Tikal and the volcanic shoreline of Lake Atitlan into one trip, which means city hotels, jungle lodges and lakeside guesthouses all in a single fortnight. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A and Typhoid for almost all travellers, with Hepatitis B and Rabies added for longer trips, rural travel or anyone working with animals.
Malaria is a low risk in some lowland and rural areas below 1,500m, including parts of the Peten near Tikal. The pharmacist will check your itinerary and advise on bite avoidance or prescription antimalarials if needed.

Recommended for longer trips, rural travel, volunteering and anyone planning jungle activities around Tikal. Three dose Hep B schedule, two dose Rabies on days 0 and 7.

Travel vaccines for Guatemala at a glance

Hepatitis A plus Typhoid
Both are standard for Guatemala, where street food, rural water sources and lakeside towns around Atitlan raise food and water risks. They can be given together as Viatim (one injection) or separately. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose (25 years with a booster); Typhoid protects for around 3 years.
Hepatitis B plus Rabies
Hepatitis B is recommended for longer stays, medical travel, volunteering and any sexual or blood contact risk. Rabies is recommended for jungle trips around Tikal, rural travel and anyone more than 24 hours from medical care. Both have accelerated schedules if you are short on time.
