Spain is one of the UK's most visited destinations, from Madrid and Barcelona city breaks to family beach weeks in Andalucia, the Costas, Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza, plus walking holidays in the Picos de Europa and Camino de Santiago. It is a low risk EU country for travel health, but a sensible vaccine plan still adds peace of mind.
For most travellers, the focus is on routine cover, especially a Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio booster (Revaxis) if you have not had one in the last 10 years, and Hepatitis A for anyone who travels regularly in Mediterranean Europe or plans to eat widely from local markets, tapas bars and chiringuitos.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC aligned travel clinic operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually fit you in same week and handle your Spain travel vaccines in a single 15 minute appointment.

Travel vaccines for Spain at a glance
Spain is a low risk EU country. NaTHNaC recommends keeping your routine NHS vaccines up to date, with a Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio booster (Revaxis) every 10 years, and considers Hepatitis A as a sensible add on for travellers who eat out widely. No yellow fever, malaria or rabies precautions are needed.
Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio
The NHS schedule covers you to early adulthood, but boosters wane after 10 years. A single Revaxis injection tops up all three for another decade and is the baseline recommendation for any European trip, including Spain.
Hepatitis A for Spain
Hepatitis A is uncommon in Spain compared to long haul destinations, but cases linked to imported produce and shellfish do occur. A single dose vaccine gives around 12 months protection, with a booster at 6 to 12 months extending cover to about 25 years. Sensible for anyone who travels often in Spain, Portugal and the wider Mediterranean.
Regional notes, Madrid to the Balearics
Madrid, Barcelona and the Costas carry no special vaccine risks beyond food and water sense and good sun protection. Andalucia and the islands can be very hot in summer, so heat illness, hydration and sun safety matter as much as vaccines. Walkers tackling the Camino de Santiago or Picos de Europa should think about foot care and tick awareness in the north.
