Essential Vaccinations for Thailand

Stay protected with these NHS and travel clinic-recommended jabs:

  1. Tetanus
    • Why? Outdoor activities (like hiking or biking) raise the risk of cuts.
    • Booster needed? Every 10 years.
  2. Hepatitis A & B
    • Why? Spread through contaminated food/water (Hep A) or blood (Hep B).
    • How long? Hep A lasts 25+ years; Hep B needs 3 doses.
  3. Japanese Encephalitis
    • Why? Mosquitoes in rural areas (like rice farms) carry this virus.
    • 2-dose course: Protects for 1–2 years.
  4. Rabies
    • Why? Stray dogs/monkeys in places like temples or jungles.
    • Pre-travel jabs: 3 doses (lasts 1–3 years).
  5. Typhoid
    • Why? Contaminated food/water in busy markets.
    • Lasts: 3 years (injection) or 1 year (tablets).

Top Tip: Book jabs 6–8 weeks before travel—some need multiple doses!

Health Tips for Thailand

  1. Beat the Bugs
    • Use DEET repellent (50%+) to avoid mosquitoes (dengue/malaria risks).
    • Sleep under a mosquito net in jungle areas.
  2. Food & Water Safety
    • Drink bottled water (avoid ice in rural spots).
    • Eat freshly cooked street food (pad Thai, mango sticky rice).
  3. Sun & Heat
    • Wear SPF 50+ (Thailand’s UV index is extreme).
    • Stay hydrated—coconut water is your friend!
  4. Healthcare in Thailand
    • Cities: Top hospitals like Bangkok Hospital have English-speaking staff.
    • Islands/rural areas: Clinics may lack equipment— travel insurance is a must!

1. Bangkok: City of Contrasts

  • Must-see: Grand Palace, Wat Arun, Chatuchak Market.
  • New for 2025: Rooftop bars with skyline views over the Chao Phraya River.
