What is the Hepatitis A vaccine?
Hepatitis A is the most common vaccine-preventable infection picked up by UK travellers, a viral liver infection spread through contaminated food and water, especially in countries with variable sanitation. Most people recover, but it can be severe in adults and can ruin a holiday for weeks.
The good news: two doses of the inactivated Hepatitis A vaccine give long-lasting protection (around 25 years), and a single first dose covers you for around 12 months, enough for almost any single trip. NaTHNaC recommends it for travel to almost every destination outside Western Europe, North America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead, operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC-registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157), offers Hepatitis A as a single vaccine or in combined Hep A+B (Twinrix®) and Hep A+Typhoid (Viatim®) injections. Fewer needles, fewer appointments, same protection.

Hepatitis A vaccine in West Hampstead - at a glance
Hepatitis A is a viral liver infection spread through food and water contaminated with the virus. It is one of the most common vaccine-preventable illnesses in travellers leaving Western Europe, North America, Japan and Australasia. Two doses of the inactivated vaccine give protection for around 25 years; a single first dose covers almost any single trip.
Who needs the Hepatitis A vaccine?
NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A vaccination for travel to most destinations in Africa, Asia, South and Central America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. It is also recommended for people travelling to visit friends and family abroad (VFR travellers), backpackers, and anyone planning to eat or drink outside major hotels and resorts. Aqua Travel Clinic offers single Hepatitis A, combined Hep A+B (Twinrix®), and combined Hep A+Typhoid (Viatim®).
How the appointment works at Aqua
Book online and come in at 59 Mill Lane, West Hampstead. The pharmacist takes a short travel history, confirms there are no contraindications, and administers the vaccine in your upper arm. Total appointment time is around 15 minutes. If you are travelling soon, even a first dose given a few days before departure gives meaningful protection.
One dose vs two doses
A single dose protects you for around 12 months. A booster given 6 to 12 months after the first dose extends protection to about 25 years and is the standard recommendation. Combined products (Twinrix for Hep B, Viatim for Typhoid) follow the same schedule but reduce the number of separate injections you need.
Side effects and contraindications
Side effects are usually mild: sore arm, mild fever or headache for a day. Hepatitis A vaccine is inactivated (not live) so is safe in pregnancy and for immunosuppressed travellers when clinically indicated. The pharmacist will check your suitability at the appointment.
