Destination guide

Travelling to Nigeria? Here is what you need.

Nigeria is one of the most-travelled long-haul destinations from London, particularly for the large Nigerian diaspora across north-west London visiting family in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Calabar, Enugu and Owerri. It is also a country where the right paperwork is non-negotiable: a valid Yellow Fever certificate is REQUIRED at the border for all travellers aged 9 months and over, with no grace period. NaTHNaC also recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Meningitis ACWY (Nigeria sits in the meningitis belt), and Rabies as standard, plus malaria prophylaxis for the entire country, year-round.

Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC-registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We sit in the heart of the NW London Nigerian VFR catchment, covering Kilburn, Brondesbury, Willesden Green, Cricklewood and Hendon, and can usually fit you in same-week, vaccinate, write your malaria prescription, and sign your Yellow Fever ICVP in a single 15-minute appointment.

Travel vaccines for Nigeria - at a glance

Nigeria requires a valid Yellow Fever certificate at entry for all travellers aged 9 months and over. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Meningitis ACWY (the country sits in the meningitis belt), Rabies and Cholera (for rural travel), with year-round malaria prophylaxis across the whole country. Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre and can vaccinate and certify in a single appointment.

Yellow Fever certificate for Nigeria

This is the headline rule for Nigeria. A valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) for Yellow Fever is REQUIRED for entry for all travellers aged 9 months and over, regardless of where you are flying from. The certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination and lasts for life. Travellers without one can be refused entry or vaccinated on arrival in non-ideal conditions. Aqua will sign and stamp your ICVP at the consultation.

Hepatitis A, Typhoid + Cholera

Hep A and Typhoid are standard for all Nigeria travel and can be given together as Viatim (one injection) or separately. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose (25 years with a booster); Typhoid protects for around 3 years. Cholera (Dukoral) is advised for longer rural stays and for travellers visiting family in areas with unreliable water.

Meningitis ACWY

Nigeria lies in the African meningitis belt. NaTHNaC recommends MenACWY for all travellers during the dry season (December to June), especially anyone travelling to the north of the country, attending mass gatherings, or staying with the local population. The vaccine is a single dose and gives around 5 years of protection.

Rabies

Recommended for VFR travel (visiting friends and relatives), longer trips, rural travel and anyone more than 24 hours from medical care. Two doses on days 0 and 7. Strongly recommended for children who may pet street dogs or animals.

Malaria

Malaria is a year-round high-risk across the entire country, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and all rural areas. The pharmacist will prescribe the right antimalarial based on your itinerary and medical history (atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine), plus written advice on DEET, nets and clothing.

Polio context

Nigeria was declared free of wild polio in 2020 but has reported circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus since. NaTHNaC advises ensuring your routine polio booster is up to date (a single adult booster of IPV is usually enough if your childhood schedule was complete). The pharmacist will check your record at the consultation.
