Why Hepatitis B vaccination matters

Protect yourself from a bloodborne virus that is endemic across much of Asia and Africa

Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver, transmitted through blood, sexual contact, contaminated medical or dental equipment, and from mother to baby. It is endemic across South and South East Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, the Pacific and parts of the Middle East, where chronic carrier rates can exceed 8 percent of the population. For travellers, the vaccine is recommended whenever the itinerary includes possible exposure: longer stays, medical or dental treatment abroad, tattoos or piercings, contact sports, healthcare or aid work, or new sexual partners. At Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead we deliver the full course using Engerix B and HBvaxPRO, including accelerated schedules for last-minute travellers.

Hepatitis B vaccine in West Hampstead, at a glance

Hepatitis B is a bloodborne virus that can cause acute liver illness and, in a meaningful minority of cases, chronic infection leading to cirrhosis or liver cancer. The vaccine is highly effective, safe across all ages, and recommended by UKHSA and NaTHNaC for any traveller whose itinerary or activities carry a plausible exposure risk. At Aqua Travel Clinic on Mill Lane in West Hampstead, NW6, you can complete the full course or start an accelerated schedule with a GPhC-registered pharmacist, with no separate consultation fee.

Who should consider the Hepatitis B vaccine

NaTHNaC advises Hepatitis B for travellers visiting countries of intermediate or high prevalence where the trip involves possible blood, body fluid or sexual exposure. In practice this includes long stays, backpacking, medical or dental treatment abroad, tattoos or piercings, contact sports, aid and healthcare work, working with children, or new sexual partners. Common high prevalence destinations include Thailand, Vietnam, China, India, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Indonesia and Cambodia. Hepatitis B is also recommended for medical tourism in any country, including the Gulf, Turkey and parts of Eastern Europe.

Schedule and doses

The standard course is three doses at 0, 1 and 6 months, providing long lasting protection in over 95 percent of healthy adults. For travellers leaving sooner we offer an accelerated schedule with doses at 0, 7 and 21 days plus a 12 month booster, which is suitable for adults aged 18 and over. A combined Hepatitis A and B option is available as Twinrix, which is often the better choice for travellers who also need Hepatitis A. We use Engerix B and HBvaxPRO as our standard monovalent brands.

Common destinations and pairings

Most Hepatitis B travellers also need Hepatitis A, and many benefit from Typhoid for the same itineraries through South and South East Asia. Rabies is worth considering for longer rural stays, cycling, or work with animals. If you are coming in for Hepatitis B for medical tourism, we will review what else your destination needs in line with NaTHNaC country pages.

Side effects and contraindications

Hepatitis B vaccines are inactivated and well tolerated. The most common side effects are a sore arm, mild headache, fatigue or low-grade fever for one to two days. Severe allergic reactions are very rare. The vaccine is not suitable for anyone with a confirmed allergy to a previous dose or to a vaccine component such as yeast. The pharmacist will screen for pregnancy, immunosuppression and bleeding disorders during the consultation, and will postpone or adapt the schedule if needed.

Booking and pricing

Appointments are available across the working week, including same-week slots for accelerated schedules. We do not list specific prices on disease pages because Hepatitis B is often paired with other vaccines: see our booking page for current per-dose pricing, combined courses, and family bookings. Aqua Travel Clinic operates from 59 Mill Lane, West Hampstead NW6 1NB, one minute from West Hampstead station. The clinic is run by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC premises 1123406), owned by Naspram Pharma Limited, with all consultations supervised by Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). Local catchments include Camden Town, Hampstead and Kilburn.
