Travelling to Ghana? Here is what you need.
Ghana is one of the safest and most welcoming travel destinations in West Africa, and a focal point of diaspora travel since the 2019 Year of Return. Whether you are heading to Accra for business, Cape Coast for the slave-trade memorial route, the Volta region for hiking and waterfalls, or Kumasi for the Ashanti heartland, the medical preparation is similar: a valid Yellow Fever certificate is REQUIRED at the border for all travellers aged 9 months and over. NaTHNaC also recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Cholera (for longer or rural trips), Meningitis ACWY (Ghana sits in the southern edge of the meningitis belt), and year-round malaria prophylaxis.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC-registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We sit at the heart of the NW London Ghanaian diaspora catchment, covering Kilburn, Brondesbury, Willesden Green and Hendon, and can usually fit you in same-week, vaccinate, write your malaria prescription, and sign your Yellow Fever ICVP in a single 15-minute appointment.

Travel vaccines for Ghana - at a glance
Ghana requires a valid Yellow Fever certificate at entry for all travellers aged 9 months and over. NaTHNaC also recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Cholera, Meningitis ACWY (Ghana sits in the southern edge of the meningitis belt) and year-round malaria prophylaxis across the country. Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre and can vaccinate and certify in a single appointment.
Yellow Fever certificate for Ghana
This is the headline rule for Ghana. A valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) for Yellow Fever is REQUIRED for entry for all travellers aged 9 months and over, regardless of where you are flying from. The certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination and lasts for life. Travellers without one risk being refused entry. Aqua will sign and stamp your ICVP at the consultation.
Hepatitis A, Typhoid + Cholera
Hep A and Typhoid are standard for all Ghana travel and can be given together as Viatim (one injection) or separately. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose (25 years with a booster); Typhoid protects for around 3 years. Cholera (Dukoral) is recommended for the Volta region, longer rural stays and family visits where water quality may be variable.
Meningitis ACWY
Ghana sits in the southern edge of the African meningitis belt. NaTHNaC recommends MenACWY during the dry season (December to June), especially for travel in northern Ghana, attending mass gatherings, or staying with local communities. The vaccine is a single dose and gives around 5 years of protection.
Rabies
Considered for longer trips, rural travel, anyone visiting family in remote areas, and anyone planning to be more than 24 hours from medical care. Two doses on days 0 and 7. Particularly worth considering for children who may pet street dogs.
Malaria
Malaria is a year-round risk across the entire country, including Accra and Kumasi. The pharmacist will prescribe the right antimalarial based on your itinerary and medical history (atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine), plus written advice on DEET, nets and clothing.
Diaspora and Year of Return travel
Since the Ghanaian government launched the Year of Return in 2019, diaspora travel from London has grown enormously, with many travellers from the NW London Ghanaian community making first-time or first-in-decades trips back. VFR travel is consistently the highest-risk category in NaTHNaC data. We recommend the full pack for Year of Return trips, especially if you are bringing children or staying outside Accra.
