Do I need Yellow Fever for Panama?

Yes if you are travelling east of the Canal, including San Blas (Guna Yala), Darien, or parts of the Caribbean coast. Strongly recommended and may be required for onward travel. A single dose gives lifelong protection.

Is malaria a risk in Panama?

Yes in eastern provinces including Darien and parts of the Caribbean coast. Panama City and the western highlands are low risk. The pharmacist will prescribe based on itinerary.

What about San Blas (Guna Yala)?

San Blas is east of the Canal so Yellow Fever is recommended. Malaria risk is present in surrounding mainland areas. Hep A and Typhoid are standard.

How soon should I book?

Ideally 4 to 6 weeks before departure, especially for the Rabies course. Last minute bookings are still worthwhile as Yellow Fever, Hep A and Typhoid give protection quickly.

Rabies

NaTHNaC recommends pre-exposure rabies vaccination for some travellers to Panama - particularly rural trips, longer stays, backpackers, cyclists, children, VFR travellers and anyone likely to have close animal contact. At Aqua we use the three-dose pre-exposure schedule on days 0, 7 and 21-28 (UK Green Book standard). Pharmacies cannot administer post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) - if you are bitten or scratched abroad, wash the wound thoroughly and go straight to A&E, NHS 111 or a local hospital for post-exposure treatment.

Yellow Fever — for travellers to eastern Panama or transiting a YF risk country

Yellow Fever vaccination is recommended if you are travelling east of the Panama Canal (including Darién). Most travellers visiting Panama City, the Canal, or the western coast do not need it. It is also required if you have been in a YF risk country in the previous six days. Aqua is a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre and issues the ICVP in-clinic.

Tuberculosis (BCG)

Considered for long-stay work in healthcare, community immersion and family travel with young children in higher-risk regions of Panama. Reviewed at consultation.

Malaria

Malaria risk varies by region in Panama. We check your itinerary against NaTHNaC and either prescribe atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline or mefloquine for higher-risk areas, or confirm you do not need cover. Bite avoidance advice (DEET, long sleeves at dawn and dusk) is included.
