Australia is a long haul favourite for Londoners: Sydney and Melbourne city breaks, the Great Barrier Reef and Cairns, the Red Centre and Uluru, plus working holidays and family visits. Compared with much of Southeast Asia, the headline vaccine list is short, but there are still important boxes to tick before you fly.
For most travellers, the priority is making sure your routine UK vaccines are up to date, especially Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio (often a single combined booster), and considering Hepatitis A for longer trips, food adventures, or remote travel. Japanese Encephalitis is only relevant if you are spending time in the Torres Strait islands or the outer Cape York peninsula during the wet season; it is not needed for mainstream Australia trips.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC aligned, GPhC registered pharmacy. We can review your itinerary, top up any routine vaccines, prescribe what you need, and write a short, practical checklist for the trip in one 15 minute appointment. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC premises 1123406, Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157).

Travel vaccines for Australia, at a glance
Australia is a low risk destination by tropical standards, but your routine UK vaccines should be up to date before you fly. NaTHNaC highlights Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio as a baseline, with Hepatitis A worth considering for longer or more adventurous trips. Japanese Encephalitis is only relevant for travellers heading to the Torres Strait islands.
Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio
The simplest and most useful top up for most Australia travellers. A single combined booster protects for around 10 years and covers minor cuts, animal scratches and accidental injuries during outdoor travel. Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio at Aqua Travel Clinic is one short injection.
Hepatitis A
Worth considering if you plan to eat widely in remote areas, work in healthcare or childcare, or stay for several months. One dose of Hepatitis A vaccine gives around 12 months of protection, with a second dose extending cover to around 25 years.
Japanese Encephalitis (Torres Strait only)
JE is not needed for Sydney, Melbourne, the Reef or the Outback. It is only recommended if you are spending time in the Torres Strait islands or the outer Cape York peninsula during the wet season. The course is two doses of Japanese Encephalitis vaccine on days 0 and 28.
Malaria, rabies and other risks
Malaria is not present in Australia. Rabies is not present in mainland Australia, but Australian bat lyssavirus is, so do not handle bats. Marine stings, sun, dehydration, snake and spider bites are far more likely day to day risks; ask the pharmacist for a written briefing on these.
