Austria is the textbook Tick-borne Encephalitis (TBE) country. The whole of Austria is classed as a TBE risk area, and routine TBE vaccination has been offered to the Austrian population since the 1980s. For UK travellers heading to Vienna for the museums, Salzburg for the music or Tyrol, Carinthia and Styria for hiking, biking and skiing in summer, TBE is the flagship pre-travel vaccine.
NaTHNaC and the UKHSA Green Book recommend TBE for anyone walking, camping, mountain biking or working outdoors in Austria, particularly from spring through autumn. The risk is present even in lowland forests and around lakes, not only at altitude. Hep A and Hep B are sensible add-ons for longer stays, festival travel and anyone planning tattoos or piercings.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is operated by Aqua Pharmacy, a GPhC registered premises (1123406) owned by Naspram Pharma Limited, under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We routinely stock TBE vaccine and can usually fit an Austria traveller in same week, deliver the first TBE dose, top up Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio if needed, and write a clear schedule for the second TBE dose.

Travel vaccines for Austria at a glance
Austria is a textbook TBE country. The whole country is a TBE risk area and Austrians are routinely vaccinated. For UK travellers heading to Vienna, Salzburg, Tyrol or Carinthia, Tick-borne Encephalitis is the flagship pre-travel vaccine, with routine boosters to round out the plan.
Tick-borne Encephalitis (TBE)
The TBE vaccine is a two dose pre-travel course, with a third dose to complete protection. Recommended for almost all outdoor travel in Austria from spring through autumn, including lowland forests, lakeside walks, summer hiking and mountain biking. Risk is not confined to altitude.
Routine cover
Check that your Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio booster is up to date. UK guidance is one booster every 10 years and many adults are overdue. We can top this up in the same appointment as your TBE dose.
Onward and neighbouring travel
Many travellers combine Austria with Germany, Switzerland, Czechia or Hungary, all of which carry TBE risk. The pharmacist will plan the whole trip in one go.
