Destination guide

Switzerland is a popular short break for London travellers and an easy add-on to wider Alpine trips. Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Lucerne are low risk from an infectious disease point of view, but the Alpine hiking, camping and biking that pull most British travellers in do raise one specific concern: Tick-borne Encephalitis (TBE).

NaTHNaC and the UKHSA Green Book recommend TBE for anyone walking, camping or working in forested areas of Switzerland below about 2,000 metres, particularly from spring through autumn. Switzerland is classified as a TBE risk country across most cantons, and routine vaccination is offered to Swiss residents who spend time outdoors.

Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is operated by Aqua Pharmacy, a GPhC registered premises (1123406) owned by Naspram Pharma Limited, under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We routinely stock TBE vaccine and can usually fit an Alpine traveller in same week, deliver the first dose, top up Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio if needed, and write a clear plan for the second dose.

Travel vaccines for Switzerland at a glance

City breaks in Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Lucerne mostly need routine cover. Alpine hiking, biking, camping and outdoor work below 2,000 metres bring Tick-borne Encephalitis (TBE) into the picture across most Swiss cantons.

Tick-borne Encephalitis (TBE)

The TBE vaccine is a two dose pre-travel course, with a third dose to complete protection. Recommended for hikers, climbers, mountain bikers and anyone spending time in Swiss forests from spring through autumn. Most travellers can fit two doses in before departure with one month between doses.

Routine cover

Make sure your Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio booster is up to date. UK guidance is one booster every 10 years; many Alpine travellers are overdue and we can top this up in the same appointment.

Other Alpine destinations

Many Switzerland travellers also visit Austria, Germany, France and Italy. Mention onward travel at the consultation and the pharmacist will plan the whole trip in one go.
