Destination guide

Bolivia is one of South America's most underrated long-haul destinations: La Paz at 3,640m, the surreal Salar de Uyuni, Lake Titicaca, the Amazon basin around Rurrenabaque, and the colonial cities of Sucre and Potosi. It is also a country where two separate planning challenges collide: tropical disease risk in the lowlands and Amazon, and serious altitude in the highlands.

Yellow Fever is required by Bolivia for entry if you are arriving from a YF risk country, and recommended for any traveller heading into the lowlands or Amazon basin (Beni, Pando, Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, La Paz lowlands). NaTHNaC also recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Rabies for most travellers.

Altitude is the other critical conversation. La Paz, the world's highest capital, sits above the threshold where most travellers feel it. Uyuni, Lake Titicaca and Potosi are all 3,600m plus. We will go through pacing, hydration, and whether Diamox (acetazolamide) is worth a script in the consultation.

Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC-registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually fit you in same-week, vaccinate, prescribe, and sign your ICVP in a single appointment.

Travel vaccines for Bolivia, at a glance

Bolivia is a Yellow Fever risk country across the lowlands and Amazon basin, and requires the certificate for entry if you are arriving from a YF risk country. NaTHNaC recommends Yellow Fever for all travel below 2,300m east of the Andes, plus Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Rabies for most travellers. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for parts of the Amazon. Altitude in La Paz (3,640m), Uyuni (3,656m), Potosi (4,067m) and Lake Titicaca (3,812m) is a major planning consideration. Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre.

Yellow Fever for Bolivia

Required for entry if you are arriving from a YF risk country, and strongly recommended for Beni, Pando, Santa Cruz, parts of La Paz and Cochabamba departments, and the Amazon basin generally. Not needed if you stay above 2,300m (La Paz city centre, Uyuni, Potosi, Sucre, Titicaca). A single dose gives lifelong protection. Aqua signs and stamps the ICVP at the consultation.

Hepatitis A and Typhoid

Both are standard for Bolivia and can be given together as Viatim (one injection) or separately. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose, and 25 years with a booster. Typhoid protects for around 3 years. These cover the food and water risks across the markets of La Paz, street food on the Death Road, and rural travel.

Rabies

Recommended for Amazon trips, longer Andes stays, rural travel, cyclists (particularly the Death Road), and anyone more than 24 hours from medical care. Two doses on days 0 and 7. Highly recommended for children.

Altitude in La Paz and Uyuni

La Paz is the highest capital in the world at 3,640m. El Alto airport sits at 4,061m, so you land at altitude. The Uyuni salt flats run at 3,656m. Lake Titicaca is 3,812m. Potosi tops out at 4,067m. Most travellers feel something between mild headache and significant malaise for the first 24 to 48 hours. Diamox (acetazolamide) is worth considering, particularly if you are going straight from sea level to La Paz or planning physical activity in the first couple of days. The pharmacist will write the script and walk you through dose, side effects, and warning signs for severe altitude illness.

Malaria and Amazon planning

Malaria is a risk in the Amazon basin and parts of Beni and Pando, particularly below 2,500m. The pharmacist will prescribe atovaquone/proguanil or doxycycline based on your itinerary, plus written advice on DEET, nets and clothing.
