Travelling to Peru? Here is what you need.
Peru is one of the most-booked long-haul holidays from London, combining city, mountain and jungle in a single trip. A classic itinerary starts in Lima, flies to Cusco for the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, then either heads down to Lake Titicaca and Arequipa, or out to the Amazon at Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado. Each region has different medical considerations: the highlands ask for altitude planning, the Amazon adds Yellow Fever and malaria, and food-and-water cover sits across the whole country.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC-registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We are a short walk from Hampstead, Belsize Park, Camden Town and Primrose Hill, putting us squarely on the gap-year and leisure-traveller route. We can vaccinate, write your altitude prescription, and sign your Yellow Fever ICVP in a single 15-minute appointment.

Travel vaccines for Peru - at a glance
Peru asks for different vaccines depending on which part of the country you visit. NaTHNaC recommends Yellow Fever for the Amazon basin, Hepatitis A and Typhoid for the whole country, Rabies for longer or jungle trips, and malaria prophylaxis for Amazon travel. Altitude is the other big planning point if you are heading to Cusco or the Sacred Valley. Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre and can vaccinate, certify, and prescribe altitude medication in a single appointment.
Yellow Fever for Peru
Yellow Fever is not required for entry into Peru itself but is strongly recommended by NaTHNaC for travel to the Amazon basin: Loreto, Madre de Dios, San Martin, and lower-altitude jungle areas. That includes Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado, the Manu reserve and Tambopata. The certificate also becomes useful for onward travel into neighbouring countries like Bolivia or Brazil. A single dose gives lifelong protection.
Hepatitis A + Typhoid
Both are standard for Peru travel including Lima, Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Hep A and Typhoid can be given together as Viatim (one injection) or separately. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose (25 years with a booster); Typhoid protects for around 3 years.
Rabies
Recommended for the Amazon, longer trips, gap years, and anyone planning to be more than 24 hours from medical care. Two doses on days 0 and 7. Particularly worth considering for travellers visiting jungle lodges, working with animals or cycling rural routes.
Malaria for the Amazon
Malaria is present in the Peruvian Amazon (Loreto, Madre de Dios, parts of San Martin) below 2,000m. Cusco, Lima, Machu Picchu and the high Andes are malaria-free. The pharmacist will prescribe atovaquone/proguanil or doxycycline if your itinerary includes the jungle.
Altitude: Cusco, Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu
Cusco sits at around 3,400m, the Sacred Valley at 2,800m to 3,000m, and Lake Titicaca at 3,800m. Most travellers experience some mild altitude symptoms (headache, breathlessness, poor sleep) on the first day or two. Acetazolamide (Diamox) is the standard pharmacological prevention and is dispensed at Aqua on a private prescription. Practical advice: arrive in the Sacred Valley first if possible (lower than Cusco), ascend slowly, hydrate, avoid alcohol and heavy meals on day one, and consider coca tea as locals do.
Machu Picchu and Inca Trail specific advice
The Inca Trail trek takes you up to around 4,200m at Dead Woman's Pass. Travellers planning the classic 4-day trek should consider acetazolamide and time their start carefully. Machu Picchu itself is at 2,430m, lower than Cusco, so altitude symptoms often improve on the day of the visit.
