Destination guide

Botswana is one of Africa's premier safari destinations, with the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and the Makgadikgadi Pans drawing UK travellers for mokoro trips, big herd game viewing and Kalahari walking safaris. Maun and Kasane are the main aviation gateways, often combined with Victoria Falls in Zambia or Zimbabwe. Botswana is not itself a Yellow Fever risk country, but a YF certificate is required if you are arriving from a YF risk country (including a recent stop in Zambia or transit through Kenya, Ethiopia or Rwanda).

NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Hepatitis B and Rabies for most Botswana itineraries, alongside a prescription antimalarial for travel to northern Botswana between November and June, and year round for some Okavango and Chobe travel. Tap water is safe in the main towns but variable in remote camps.

Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). Most safari travellers leave with everything they need in a single 15 minute appointment.

Travel vaccines for Botswana at a glance

Botswana is not a Yellow Fever risk country, but a valid YF certificate is required if you are arriving from a YF risk country (including Zambia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda or Tanzania). NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Hepatitis B and Rabies for most travellers, with malaria prophylaxis for northern Botswana. Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre.

Hepatitis A and Typhoid

Both are standard for Botswana travel and can be given together as Viatim (one injection) or separately. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose (25 years with a booster); Typhoid protects for around 3 years.

Hepatitis B

Recommended for longer stays, anyone undertaking adventure activities, and travellers who may need medical or dental care abroad. The accelerated three dose schedule (days 0, 7 and 21) is usually possible if you have a few weeks before travel.

Rabies

Recommended for safari, mokoro trips, walking safaris in the Kalahari, and anyone staying in remote camps more than 24 hours from post exposure treatment. Botswana has bats and stray dogs in some areas. Two doses on days 0 and 7.

Malaria in Botswana

Malaria is present in northern Botswana (Okavango Delta, Chobe, Linyanti, Kasane) from November to June, and year round in some areas. Southern Botswana including Gaborone and most of the Kalahari is generally low risk. The pharmacist prescribes the right antimalarial for your itinerary, plus written advice on bite avoidance for sunset and night drives.

Yellow Fever transit and certificates

If you are routing through a YF risk country such as Kenya, Ethiopia, Zambia or Rwanda, Botswana border control will ask for your ICVP. Aqua is a NaTHNaC designated YF centre and can vaccinate and certify in the same appointment. Book your Botswana travel vaccines online. Most travellers are sorted in a single 15 minute appointment.
