Namibia is one of Africa's classic self-drive destinations: the salt pans and waterholes of Etosha, the red dunes of Sossusvlei, the eerie shipwreck coast at Skeleton Coast, and Windhoek as a starting point. Most UK travellers fly in via Johannesburg or Frankfurt and pick up a 4x4 for a two-week loop.
From a travel-health point of view, Namibia is lower risk than its safari neighbours but still needs proper preparation. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are recommended for all travellers. Rabies is strongly recommended for self-drive trips where you may be far from medical care, and for anyone planning to spend time around rural villages or working animals. Malaria is a seasonal risk in the northern third of the country (Caprivi Strip, Kavango, Etosha north) from November to June.
Yellow Fever is required for entry if you are arriving from a YF risk country, including most of sub-Saharan Africa. If your itinerary takes you from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda or Zambia into Namibia, you will need your ICVP certificate at the border.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC-registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually fit you in same-week and handle vaccines, malaria prescription and your Yellow Fever certificate in a single 15 minute appointment.

Travel vaccines for Namibia, at a glance
Namibia is not a Yellow Fever risk country itself, but you will need a YF certificate if you are arriving from a YF risk country. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Rabies for most travellers, with malaria prophylaxis if your itinerary includes the Caprivi Strip, Kavango or northern Etosha during the wet season (November to June).
Hep A, Typhoid and Rabies
Hepatitis A and Typhoid are standard for all Namibia travel and can be given together as combined Viatim. Rabies is strongly recommended for self-drive trips. The two-dose pre-exposure course (days 0 and 7) is much simpler than scrambling for post-exposure treatment in rural Namibia.
Malaria, north of the country only
Most of the popular Namibian itinerary (Windhoek, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, southern Etosha) is malaria free. The northern third, including the Caprivi Strip, Kavango region and northern Etosha, is a seasonal malaria zone. The pharmacist will prescribe atovaquone/proguanil or doxycycline depending on your dates.
