Cambodia is one of Southeast Asia's most rewarding destinations: the temple complex of Angkor Wat, the riverside cafes of Siem Reap, the Royal Palace and S-21 museum in Phnom Penh, and beach time in Sihanoukville and Koh Rong. It is also a country where the right vaccines matter: Hepatitis A and Typhoid are standard for almost all travellers, Japanese Encephalitis is recommended for stays of a month or more or rural travel, and Rabies is recommended for almost all travellers because of high stray dog populations and limited post-exposure care outside Phnom Penh.
Malaria risk is present in forested areas, particularly along the Thai border (Pailin, Battambang, Pursat), and dengue is a year-round risk across the country. The pharmacist will discuss bite avoidance, antimalarials where needed, and the Qdenga dengue vaccine for previously infected travellers.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a GPhC-registered travel vaccination service. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC-registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually fit you in same-week, review your itinerary, and complete your vaccinations in a single appointment.

Travel vaccines for Cambodia, at a glance
NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Rabies for almost all Cambodia travellers, with Japanese Encephalitis for longer trips and rural travel. Malaria is present in forested border areas. Dengue is a year-round risk. Aqua Travel Clinic can vaccinate and prescribe antimalarials in a single appointment.
Hepatitis A and Typhoid
Both are standard for Cambodia and can be given together as Viatim (one injection) or separately. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose (25 years with a booster); Typhoid protects for around 3 years. Food and water hygiene varies widely, and even travellers eating in upmarket Siem Reap restaurants are at risk.
Japanese Encephalitis
JE is a mosquito-borne viral infection found in rural and rice-growing regions of Cambodia. Transmission is year-round but peaks during the rainy season (May to October). The vaccine is recommended for travellers spending a month or more in country, or shorter trips with significant rural exposure (cycling around Angkor, homestays, working in rice fields). Two doses are given on days 0 and 28; an accelerated schedule (days 0 and 7) is also available for last-minute travellers.
Rabies
Cambodia has some of the highest rates of human rabies in Southeast Asia. Stray dogs are common in cities, towns, temple sites and villages, and bites can occur even at Angkor Wat. Post-exposure treatment requires evacuation to Phnom Penh or Bangkok, and rabies immunoglobulin is often unavailable. Pre-exposure vaccination (two doses, days 0 and 7) is strongly recommended for almost all travellers, particularly children.
Malaria and dengue
Malaria is present in forested areas, particularly along the Thai border (Pailin, Battambang, Pursat) and the Laos border. The risk in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and around Angkor Wat is very low. The pharmacist will check your itinerary and prescribe atovaquone/proguanil or doxycycline if your route includes high-risk areas. Dengue is endemic and a year-round risk; bite avoidance is essential.
Other considerations
We also check that your Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio and MMR are up to date. Cholera (Dukoral) can be considered for high-risk rural travel or aid workers.
