Thailand is one of the UK's top long-haul destinations: Bangkok street food, Chiang Mai temples and elephant sanctuaries, Phuket and Koh Samui beaches, and the diving capitals of Krabi and Koh Tao. Whatever the itinerary, NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Hepatitis B for almost every traveller, with Rabies and Japanese Encephalitis added for rural, longer or rainy-season trips.
Malaria risk in Thailand is low and patchy. Most tourist areas, including Bangkok, Phuket and Koh Samui, are not malarial. Awareness, repellent and bite avoidance are usually enough, but the pharmacist will check your specific itinerary against current UKHSA maps.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We usually fit travellers in within the week and complete the full Thailand vaccine plan in a single 15 minute appointment.
What's included in your Thailand travel consultation
Everything you need for a safe Thailand trip, in one short appointment with a GPhC-registered pharmacist.
Hepatitis A + Typhoid
Standard for Thailand because of food and waterborne risk, especially street food. Available as combined Hepatyrix or Viatim®, or as separate vaccines.
Hepatitis B
Recommended for most Thailand travellers, particularly anyone considering tattoos, piercings, medical care or new sexual partners. Combined Twinrix® covers Hep A + B in one schedule.
Rabies (pre-exposure)
Recommended for longer trips, rural travel, cyclists, runners and anyone working with animals. Two doses on days 0 and 7. Especially relevant for stray dogs and macaques in Thailand.
Japanese Encephalitis
Consider for stays of a month or more, or shorter rural visits in the rainy season (May to October), particularly around rice paddies in the north and northeast.
How your Thailand appointment works
From booking to boarding, four short steps with a GPhC-registered pharmacist.

3. Vaccinate + advise

4. Bite avoidance + practical advice
Dengue prevention, food and water safety, and a written checklist for the trip.
Travel vaccines for Thailand, at a glance
Thailand is a high-volume tourist destination but it still carries real travel health risks. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A and Typhoid for almost every traveller, with Hepatitis B for most, Rabies for rural and longer trips, and Japanese Encephalitis for rainy-season rural stays. Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead covers all of these in a single consultation.
Hepatitis A and Typhoid
Bangkok street food, beach barbecues, Chiang Mai night markets, all wonderful, all higher-risk for food and waterborne illness. Hepatitis A is transmitted through contaminated food and water; a single dose protects for around 12 months, with a booster taking you to 25 years. Typhoid (Typhim Vi®) protects for around 3 years. The two can be combined as Viatim® in a single injection.
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is recommended for most Thailand trips because of the risk from medical care, tattoos, piercings, contact sports and new sexual partners. The Twinrix® combined Hep A + B schedule saves an injection if you also need Hep A.
Rabies
Thailand has significant rabies risk from stray dogs, macaques and bats. Pre-exposure vaccination matters not because it prevents the disease alone, but because post-exposure care abroad is often slow, expensive and may use older protocols. With a two-dose pre-exposure course on days 0 and 7, post-bite care becomes much simpler. Strongly recommended for children, cyclists, runners, anyone heading off the beaten track, and longer stays.
Japanese Encephalitis
Spread by mosquitoes around rice paddies and pig farms, JE is rare but serious. NaTHNaC recommends it for stays of a month or more, or shorter rural visits in the rainy season (May to October), especially in the north and northeast. Two doses on days 0 and 28, ideally finished a week before travel.
Malaria and dengue
Most tourist Thailand is not malarial. Risk is concentrated in forested border areas with Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia. The pharmacist will check your itinerary against UKHSA maps and prescribe only if needed. Dengue is widespread in Thailand year-round, especially in the rainy season. There is no UK NHS dengue vaccination programme, so prevention is through DEET, long sleeves and avoiding standing water. Ask the pharmacist about Qdenga® eligibility if you have had dengue before.
When to come in
Ideally 4 to 6 weeks before departure, especially if you want the Rabies or Japanese Encephalitis course. If you are short on time, even 1 to 2 weeks is worthwhile, single-dose Hep A, Typhoid and the first Hep B give meaningful protection quickly.
