Destination guide

Laos is one of Southeast Asia's most rewarding off the beaten track destinations: French colonial Luang Prabang on the Mekong, the karst landscape and tubing of Vang Vieng, the 4,000 Islands of the south, and serious jungle trekking in Bokeo and Nam Et Phou Louey. It is also a country where rural medical infrastructure is limited, so the right travel vaccines and a clear malaria plan matter.

NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies for most Laos itineraries, with Cholera (Dukoral) considered for high risk rural travel. Malaria is present in border and rural areas, and the pharmacist will recommend the right antimalarial for your route.

Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually fit you in same week, vaccinate, and dispense your malaria prescription in a single appointment.

Travel vaccines for Laos at a glance

Laos is not a Yellow Fever risk country, but NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies for most travellers. Malaria is present in rural and border areas. Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead can vaccinate in a single appointment.

Hepatitis A and Typhoid

Both are standard for Laos travel and can be given together as Viatim (one injection) or separately. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose (25 years with a booster); Typhoid protects for around 3 years. Worth having for any traveller eating local food on the Mekong or in Luang Prabang night markets.

Japanese Encephalitis

JE is a mosquito borne viral infection found across rural Laos, particularly around rice paddies and pig farming areas. NaTHNaC recommends it for rural itineraries, stays of a month or more, and travellers heading to Vang Vieng, the Bolaven Plateau or the 4,000 Islands. Two doses are needed (days 0 and 28, or accelerated days 0 and 7 in adults under 65).

Rabies

Recommended for almost all Laos itineraries. Stray dogs are common, and rabies post exposure treatment (human rabies immunoglobulin) is very hard to source in Laos. Pre exposure vaccination converts a panic scramble into a routine two dose top up. Two doses on days 0 and 7.

Malaria

Risk is present in rural and forested border areas, particularly the south (Champasak, Attapeu, Sekong) and east near the Vietnam border. Luang Prabang and Vientiane city centres are low risk. The pharmacist will recommend atovaquone/proguanil or doxycycline depending on your route.
