Ethiopia is one of the most extraordinary destinations in Africa: the rock hewn churches of Lalibela, trekking in the Simien Mountains, the tribal cultures of the Omo Valley, and Addis Ababa for business and family visits. It is also a country where the vaccine pack needs to be complete, because Ethiopia sits in the African meningitis belt, has Yellow Fever risk, and significant rabies exposure in rural areas.
NaTHNaC recommends Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A and Typhoid for most travellers, plus Cholera (Dukoral) for higher risk itineraries and rural travel, Meningitis ACWY for travel during the dry season (December to June), and Rabies for longer trips, trekking, or anyone working with animals or visiting family in rural areas.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We have specific experience with the Ethiopian community across Kilburn, Brondesbury, Cricklewood and Hendon, including VFR (visiting friends and relatives) travel which often needs the full pack. Same week appointments, full ICVP issued in clinic.

Travel vaccines for Ethiopia at a glance
Ethiopia requires Yellow Fever for entry and sits in the African meningitis belt. NaTHNaC recommends Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Cholera, Meningitis ACWY (in dry season) and Rabies for most itineraries, with malaria prophylaxis for lowland travel. Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre and can vaccinate and certify in a single appointment.
Yellow Fever for Ethiopia
Yellow Fever vaccination is required for entry to Ethiopia for all travellers over 9 months of age. The vaccine gives lifelong protection from a single dose. Aqua will sign and stamp your ICVP certificate at the consultation. Even short trips into Addis need this paperwork at immigration.
Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Cholera
Hep A and Typhoid are standard for all Ethiopia travel and can be given together as Viatim (one injection) or separately. Cholera (Dukoral, oral two dose) is recommended for rural travel, the Omo Valley, longer trips, or anyone with reduced stomach acid or chronic illness. Risk is real in rural water and street food.
Meningitis ACWY for the dry season
Ethiopia is part of the African meningitis belt. Meningitis ACWY vaccination is strongly recommended for travel during the dry season (December to June), particularly for trekking in the Simien or visiting rural areas where transmission spikes. Single dose, protection within 7 to 10 days.
Rabies for trekking and rural travel
Recommended for the Simien Mountains, Omo Valley, longer trips, anyone working with animals, and most VFR travellers visiting family in rural areas. Two doses on days 0 and 7. Highly recommended for children, who are at higher risk from dog bites.
Malaria for the lowlands
Malaria is present below 2,000m year round, including Gambella, the Omo Valley, and most of the lowlands. Addis Ababa (2,400m), the central highlands, Lalibela and Simien are above the transmission line. The pharmacist will prescribe atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline or mefloquine based on your itinerary.
VFR travel and the Ethiopian community
If you are visiting family in Ethiopia (visiting friends and relatives travel), you often need a more complete vaccine pack because itineraries skew rural, longer, and involve more time in family homes. Aqua serves the Ethiopian community across Kilburn, Brondesbury, Cricklewood and Hendon and we are used to building the right pack for VFR travellers including children.
