Destination guide

Kazakhstan is a growing destination for UK travellers: Almaty for skiing and city breaks, Astana for business, and Charyn Canyon, Big Almaty Lake and the Tien Shan foothills for hiking and outdoors. Itineraries that include forested or rural areas need a few specific vaccines on top of the basics.

NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A and Typhoid for most travellers, with Hepatitis B for longer stays or healthcare exposure. Tick borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a real risk in forested areas of southern and eastern Kazakhstan, particularly in spring and summer, and Rabies is recommended for rural travel or anyone planning to be more than 24 hours from medical care. Standard UK boosters should also be up to date.

Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually fit you in same week, vaccinate, and give written itinerary specific advice in a single appointment.

Travel vaccines for Kazakhstan, at a glance

Kazakhstan is a moderate risk destination depending on your itinerary. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A and Typhoid for most travellers, with Tick borne Encephalitis added for forested regions and Rabies for rural travel. Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead can vaccinate and advise in a single appointment.

Hepatitis A and Typhoid

Both are standard for Kazakhstan travel. Can be given as separate vaccines or combined Viatim (one injection). Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose (25 years with a booster). Typhoid protects for around 3 years.

Tick borne Encephalitis (TBE)

TBE is a real risk in forested southern and eastern regions of Kazakhstan, particularly spring and summer when ticks are active. Two doses on days 0 and 14 give good cover for one season. Recommended for hiking and outdoor itineraries.

Rabies

Recommended for rural travel, longer trips, and anyone more than 24 hours from medical care. Two doses on days 0 and 7.

Hepatitis B

For longer stays, healthcare workers, or anyone who may need medical or dental care. Three dose course; accelerated schedules available.
