Russia is a vast country and the vaccine plan changes with the itinerary. City breaks in Moscow and St Petersburg are mostly about routine cover and food and water hygiene. The Trans-Siberian railway, summer hiking in the Urals, Karelia, Siberia and the Russian Far East all bring Tick-borne Encephalitis (TBE) firmly into the picture.
NaTHNaC and the UKHSA Green Book recommend Tick-borne Encephalitis for anyone walking, camping or working in forested or rural parts of Russia from spring through autumn. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are standard for trips outside the main cities, and Hepatitis B is sensible for longer stays, healthcare contact or anyone likely to need medical treatment in country.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is operated by Aqua Pharmacy, a GPhC registered premises (1123406) owned by Naspram Pharma Limited, under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We routinely stock TBE vaccine and can usually fit a Russia traveller in for a same week appointment, deliver the first TBE dose and write a written schedule for the booster doses.

Travel vaccines for Russia at a glance
For Moscow and St Petersburg the focus is routine cover and food and water hygiene. For the Trans-Siberian railway, the Urals, Karelia, Siberia and the Russian Far East, Tick-borne Encephalitis (TBE) is the flagship vaccine. Hep A, Hep B and Typhoid are recommended for many itineraries.
Tick-borne Encephalitis (TBE)
TBE is present across much of forested Russia from spring through autumn. The TBE vaccine is a two dose pre-travel course with a third dose to complete protection. Recommended for anyone walking, camping, working or sleeping outdoors in rural or forested areas, including most Trans-Siberian itineraries.
Hepatitis A and Typhoid
Standard for trips outside the main cities and for any independent or rural travel. Hepatitis A protects for around 12 months from a single dose, 25 years with a booster. Typhoid protects for around 3 years and can be combined with Hep A in a single Viatim injection.
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is recommended for longer stays, healthcare workers, anyone with potential exposure to medical or dental treatment, tattoos or piercings, and for travellers planning to live or work in country.
Onward travel
Many Russia travellers continue to Mongolia, Kazakhstan or Ukraine, all of which carry their own vaccine considerations. Mention any onward travel at the consultation and the pharmacist will plan the whole trip in one go.
