China is one of the world's most varied destinations: the Great Wall and Forbidden City in Beijing, the skyscrapers and Bund of Shanghai, the panda reserves and spicy hotpot of Sichuan, and the high-altitude monasteries of Tibet. It is also a country where the right vaccines matter: Hepatitis A and Typhoid are recommended for almost all travellers, Japanese Encephalitis is recommended for rural travel between May and October, and Rabies is recommended for longer stays, rural travel, cyclists and anyone working with animals.
Malaria risk in China is very low and limited to remote areas of Yunnan near the Myanmar border. Most travellers will not need antimalarials, but the pharmacist will check your itinerary carefully.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a GPhC-registered travel vaccination service. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC-registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). Travel vaccines for China, at a glance
NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A and Typhoid for most travellers to China, Japanese Encephalitis for rural travel between May and October, and Rabies for longer trips, cyclists and anyone working with animals. Hepatitis B is recommended for longer stays. Malaria risk is very low and limited to remote Yunnan.
Hepatitis A and Typhoid
Both are standard for China travel and can be given together as Viatim (one injection) or separately. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose (25 years with a booster); Typhoid protects for around 3 years. Both are food and water-borne illnesses, and even urban travellers eating in restaurants are at risk.
Japanese Encephalitis for rural travel
Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito-borne viral infection found in rural and rice-growing regions of China. The risk is highest between May and October, particularly in eastern and southern provinces. The vaccine is recommended for travellers spending a month or more in rural areas, or shorter trips with significant rural exposure (cycling, hiking, working in rice fields). Two doses are given on days 0 and 28; an accelerated schedule (days 0 and 7) is also available for last-minute travellers.
Rabies
Rabies is endemic in China. Pre-exposure vaccination is recommended for longer trips, rural travel, cyclists, runners, children and anyone working with animals. Two doses on days 0 and 7 give meaningful protection and simplify post-exposure treatment if you are bitten.
Hepatitis B and routine vaccines
Hepatitis B is recommended for stays of a month or more, and anyone likely to receive medical or dental care. We also check that your Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio and MMR are up to date.
Tibet, altitude and pollution
If you are travelling to Tibet (Lhasa sits at 3,656m), the pharmacist can discuss acetazolamide for altitude sickness. We can also advise on dealing with high air pollution in Beijing and other megacities, particularly if you have asthma.
