Do I need Yellow Fever for Malawi?

Only if you are arriving from a YF risk country. Malawi itself is not a YF risk country, but if your route includes a stop in a YF risk country you will need a certificate.

Do I need malaria tablets for Malawi?

Yes, malaria is present year round across the whole country, including Lake Malawi shoreline. The pharmacist will prescribe the right tablets for your itinerary.

How soon should I come in?

Ideally 4 to 6 weeks before travel, especially if you want the Rabies course. Even 2 to 3 days before travel is worthwhile.

What about Lake Malawi swimming?

Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) is present in freshwater. The pharmacist will go through risk reduction and post travel testing in the consultation.

Standard for food/water hygiene. Available as separate vaccines or combined Viatim in one injection. Hep A covers 12 months from one dose (25 years with booster); Typhoid protects around 3 years.

Tetanus / Diphtheria / Polio (Td/IPV) booster

A 10-year booster is standard for travel and takes 60 seconds in the same appointment.

Malaria prescription

Malaria is endemic. The pharmacist reviews your itinerary and prescribes atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline or mefloquine in the same appointment. Bite avoidance advice (DEET, nets, clothing) included.

Travel vaccines for Malawi - at a glance

Hepatitis A and Typhoid

Standard for all Malawi travel. Available as Viatim (combined, one injection) or as separate vaccines. Hepatitis A protects for around 12 months from one dose and around 25 years with a booster. Typhoid protects for around 3 years.

Rabies

NaTHNaC recommends pre-exposure rabies vaccination for some travellers to Malawi - particularly rural trips, longer stays, backpackers, cyclists, children, VFR travellers and anyone likely to have close animal contact. At Aqua we use the three-dose pre-exposure schedule on days 0, 7 and 21-28 (UK Green Book standard). Pharmacies cannot administer post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) - if you are bitten or scratched abroad, wash the wound thoroughly and go straight to A&E, NHS 111 or a local hospital for post-exposure treatment.

Hepatitis B

Three-dose course (0, 1, 6 months) recommended for longer stays, medical or dental procedures, tattoos, piercings and new sexual partners abroad. An accelerated schedule is available for shorter lead times.

Cholera (Dukoral)

An oral two-dose vaccine considered for prolonged rural, humanitarian or outbreak-area travel. It also provides useful cover against some travellers' diarrhoea.

Tuberculosis (BCG)

Considered for long-stay work in healthcare, community immersion and family travel with young children in higher-risk regions of Malawi. Reviewed at consultation.
