Malaysia covers a wide spread of travel styles: Kuala Lumpur city breaks, Langkawi and Penang beach holidays, and rainforest, diving and orangutan trips to Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak). Each carries a slightly different vaccine profile. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A and Typhoid as standard, with Hepatitis B for longer stays, Japanese Encephalitis for Borneo and rural areas, and Rabies for adventurous trips, longer stays, or anyone working with animals.
Malaria risk in Malaysia is low overall but present in deep rainforest areas of Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak). Tetanus, diphtheria and polio boosters should be up to date for any trip.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, run by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually fit you in same week and complete your Malaysia plan in a single short appointment.

Travel vaccines for Malaysia, at a glance
Malaysia is a varied destination. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A and Typhoid for all travellers, with Hepatitis B for longer stays, and Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies for Borneo, rural and adventure travel. Malaria is a low overall risk, with focal pockets in Borneo rainforest.
Hepatitis A and Typhoid
Standard for all Malaysia trips, including city only Kuala Lumpur breaks. Both transmitted through contaminated food and water. Available as separate injections or combined Viatim. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose (25 years with a booster); Typhoid protects for around 3 years.
Hepatitis B
Recommended for stays over a month, healthcare workers, or anyone considering tattoos, piercings, medical or dental procedures abroad. A three dose course (days 0, 7, 21 or 28) gives long term protection.
Japanese Encephalitis, Borneo and rural
JE is a mosquito borne viral infection found in rural rice farming areas across Malaysia, with year round transmission in Sarawak. The vaccine is recommended for Borneo travel and longer rural stays. Two doses are given on days 0 and 28.
Rabies and malaria
Rabies is present in Malaysia, with Sarawak in particular reporting human cases. The vaccine is recommended for adventure travel, longer trips, rural exposure, or anyone working with animals. Two doses on days 0 and 7. Malaria is low risk overall but present in deep rainforest areas of Borneo; the pharmacist will advise whether prophylaxis is needed.
