Destination guide

Oman is one of the safest and most rewarding destinations on the Arabian Peninsula. Travellers from London visit Muscat for the Royal Opera House and Mutrah Souq, Nizwa for the Friday goat market and Jebel Akhdar mountains, and Salalah in the south for the Khareef monsoon season when the desert turns green.

The core NaTHNaC recommendations for Oman are Hepatitis A and Typhoid for all travellers, plus Hepatitis B for longer stays, healthcare contact, or any chance of medical or dental treatment. Rabies is worth considering for desert camping, wadi hiking, and trips into the Hajar mountains where contact with stray dogs or bats is possible.

There is no malaria risk in Muscat or along the standard tourist routes, although a very small residual risk exists in remote areas of the Musandam Peninsula and along the Yemen border. Heat illness, dehydration and road traffic injuries are the most realistic day to day risks.

Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is operated by Aqua Pharmacy, a GPhC registered premises (1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually book you in within the same week, run through your itinerary, vaccinate, and send you off with a written checklist for the trip.

Travel vaccines for Oman at a glance

Oman is low risk for vaccine preventable disease compared to many regional destinations, but NaTHNaC still recommends Hepatitis A and Typhoid for all travellers, with Hepatitis B for longer stays and Rabies for desert and mountain itineraries. Yellow Fever is required only if you are arriving from a Yellow Fever risk country.

Hepatitis A and Typhoid

Both are standard for Oman, mainly through food and water exposure in souks, road trip stops and rural restaurants. Hep A is a single dose giving around 12 months of cover (25 years with a booster). Typhoid gives around 3 years.

Hepatitis B

Recommended for longer trips, expat moves, healthcare contact and anyone with the small but real chance of needing dental or hospital treatment while abroad.

Rabies

Worth considering for the kind of itineraries that actually take you into Oman, wadi hiking, Jebel Akhdar overnights, desert camps in Wahiba Sands. Two doses on days 0 and 7.

Yellow Fever and ICVP

Yellow Fever is required only if you are arriving from a YF risk country. We can issue and certify the ICVP if you need it.
