Destination guide

Taiwan is a popular East Asia trip for UK travellers: Taipei city breaks, Taroko Gorge hiking, Sun Moon Lake, and food tours through Tainan and Kaohsiung. Most travellers spend time in well developed cities with excellent healthcare, but rural and summer travel adds a few specific risks worth covering before you fly.

NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B for most travellers, plus Japanese Encephalitis for anyone spending time in rural areas or rice growing regions, particularly between May and October when mosquito activity peaks. Standard UK boosters (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio, MMR) should also be up to date.

Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually fit you in same week, vaccinate, and give written itinerary specific advice in a single appointment.

Travel vaccines for Taiwan, at a glance

Taiwan is a low to moderate risk destination depending on your itinerary. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B for most travellers, with Japanese Encephalitis added for rural or summer trips. Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead can vaccinate and advise in a single appointment.

Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B

Both are standard for Taiwan travel and can be given together as combined Twinrix or separately. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose (25 years with a booster). Hep B is a three dose course but accelerated schedules are available.

Japanese Encephalitis

Recommended for travellers spending time in rural areas, rice growing regions, or staying longer than a month, particularly during the summer transmission season (May to October). Two doses on days 0 and 28, or accelerated on days 0 and 7.

Routine boosters

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio and MMR should all be up to date. We can check your record and top up at the same appointment.
