Destination guide

Japan is one of the safer long haul destinations from the UK, but it still has specific travel health considerations. Tokyo and Kyoto are very low risk urban environments, however Hepatitis A remains a NaTHNaC recommendation for most travellers, and Japanese Encephalitis is recommended for those spending time in rural rice growing areas during the May to October transmission season.

Tetanus, diphtheria and polio boosters should be up to date for any international trip. Routine MMR cover is also worth checking given recent measles activity across Asia.

Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, run by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually fit you in same week, review your itinerary, and complete any Japan vaccines in a single short appointment.

Travel vaccines for Japan, at a glance

Japan is a low risk destination for urban travel in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and other major cities. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A for most travellers and Japanese Encephalitis only for those visiting rural rice growing areas during the May to October transmission season. Tetanus boosters should be up to date for any international trip.

Tetanus, diphtheria and polio

A 10 yearly booster is recommended for any international travel. The Revaxis vaccine covers all three in a single injection, and gives full protection within two weeks.

Hepatitis A

Standard NaTHNaC recommendation for Japan. Transmitted through contaminated food and water, even in low risk destinations small outbreaks occur. A single dose protects for around 12 months, or 25 years with a booster at 6 to 12 months.

Japanese Encephalitis, rural travel only

JE is a mosquito borne viral infection found mainly in rural rice farming areas of Japan during the May to October season. The vaccine is recommended only for travellers planning more than a month in rural areas, or shorter stays with significant rural exposure during transmission season. Two doses are given on days 0 and 28. Urban travellers to Tokyo and Kyoto generally do not need it.

Routine cover and practical advice

Check MMR cover, especially for adults born after 1970 with uncertain childhood vaccination records. Japan has excellent medical care, so any treatment abroad is high quality. Travel insurance with medical cover is still strongly recommended.
