What is Twinrix and why combine Hep A and Hep B?
Twinrix® is a single-injection combined vaccine that protects against both Hepatitis A (food and water-borne liver virus) and Hepatitis B (blood and body-fluid liver virus). For travellers who need both, it is a more convenient option than getting the standalone Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccines as separate injections.
The maths is simple: the standard standalone schedule is 2 doses of Hep A plus 3 doses of Hep B (5 injections, 3 appointments). Twinrix delivers the same protection in 3 doses (3 injections, 3 appointments), a saving of two needles. There is also an accelerated 4-dose schedule (day 0, 7, 21 to 30, then 12 months) for travellers leaving in under a month.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead, operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC-registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157), offers Twinrix on standard and accelerated schedules.

Twinrix® in West Hampstead at a glance
Twinrix is a combined Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccine given as a single intramuscular injection. It delivers the same long-term protection as the standalone vaccines but in fewer needles overall: 3 Twinrix doses cover both diseases, compared to 2 Hep A plus 3 Hep B (5 separate injections) on the standalone schedules. For travellers who need both vaccines (long-stay travel, healthcare exposure abroad, gap years, expat moves), Twinrix is usually the right choice.
Who is Twinrix for?
NaTHNaC recommends combined Hep A and B cover for travellers heading to long-stay destinations in Asia, Africa, South and Central America or Eastern Europe, healthcare and aid workers, expat moves, gap-year backpackers, and anyone whose trip may involve tattoos, piercings, sexual contact or medical care abroad. If you only need Hep A, the standalone Hepatitis A vaccine is more cost-effective. If you only need Hep B (commonly for occupational reasons), the standalone Hepatitis B vaccine is the right product.
Schedules: standard vs accelerated
The standard Twinrix schedule is 3 doses at 0, 1 and 6 months. By the third dose, antibody levels are essentially identical to the standalone Hep A (25-plus years) and Hep B (likely lifelong) courses. If you are leaving in under a month, the accelerated schedule of 0, 7 and 21 to 30 days, plus a 12-month booster, gives meaningful Hep B cover before departure. The pharmacist will pick the right schedule at your appointment.
How the appointment works at Aqua
Book online and come to 59 Mill Lane, West Hampstead. The pharmacist confirms your itinerary, screens for contraindications, picks the right schedule and administers the first injection in your upper arm. Total appointment time is around 15 minutes. Before you leave, we book your follow-up doses so the course is locked in.
Why combine instead of separate?
It comes down to needles and visits. A standalone Hep A plus Hep B course is 5 injections over 6 months. The standard Twinrix course is 3 injections over 6 months. For travellers who already need both vaccines, that is two fewer needles and the same final protection. The cross-reference to standalone Hep A and Hep B pages explains the standalone options for anyone who only needs one.
Side effects and contraindications
Most people experience only mild side effects: sore arm, low-grade fever, mild headache or fatigue for 24 to 48 hours. Twinrix is inactivated (not live), so it is safe in pregnancy and for immunosuppressed travellers when clinically indicated. The pharmacist will check your suitability at the appointment.
