What is the travel influenza vaccine?
Seasonal influenza (flu) is a respiratory illness caused by influenza A and B viruses, spreading easily in crowded and enclosed environments. For travellers, the highest risk situations are long-haul flights, cruise ships, mass gatherings such as the Hajj and Umrah, and travel during peak flu season in either hemisphere. Older adults, pregnant travellers, and those with chronic heart or lung conditions are at greater risk of severe illness.
The travel flu vaccine is an inactivated vaccine, given as a single intramuscular dose. Protection develops over 10 to 14 days and lasts for one flu season. The Northern Hemisphere formulation is the standard NHS-aligned vaccine for trips between October and April. Travellers visiting the Southern Hemisphere during their winter (April to September) can sometimes benefit from the Southern Hemisphere formulation; this is checked on a per-trip basis.

Travel flu vaccine in West Hampstead, at a glance
Influenza is a respiratory illness caused by influenza A and B viruses, spreading easily in crowded indoor settings. For travellers, the highest-risk scenarios include long-haul flights, cruise ships, mass gatherings such as Hajj and Umrah, and travel during peak flu season in either hemisphere. UKHSA Green Book Chapter 19 covers travel flu vaccination as standard for travellers at increased risk of exposure or complications.
Who needs the travel flu vaccine?
The vaccine is recommended for any traveller aged 65 or over, anyone with a chronic heart, lung, kidney, liver or neurological condition, pregnant travellers at any stage, and any traveller heading into a mass-gathering setting such as the Hajj or Umrah pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Ministry of Health strongly recommends seasonal flu vaccination for all pilgrims. It is also worth considering for cruise travellers and travellers visiting friends and family in high-density urban areas of the USA, China, or Japan during their flu season.
How the appointment works at Aqua
You book online and come in for a single dose. The injection takes 2 minutes. Protection develops over 10 to 14 days and lasts for one flu season. Booking 2 to 4 weeks before travel is ideal but not essential: even a same-day jab before a flight will start building protection in flight, with full protection developing during your trip. The vaccine is updated each year to match circulating strains.
Destinations and itineraries where it matters most
We commonly vaccinate travellers heading to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah, especially when these fall during the cooler Saudi winter months when respiratory viruses circulate more. We also see USA, China, and Japan winter travel, cruise itineraries, and Nepal trekking trips where altitude and crowded tea houses increase respiratory illness risk. We frequently pair travel flu with Meningitis ACWY for Hajj pilgrims, plus Hepatitis A and a Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio booster.
Side effects and contraindications
Most people experience only mild side effects: sore arm, brief muscle aches, low-grade fever for 24 hours. The vaccine is inactivated and cannot cause flu. Severe egg allergy needs an individual assessment as some flu vaccines contain residual egg protein; egg-free options exist if needed. It is safe and recommended in pregnancy.
