Destination guide

Bangladesh is a major VFR destination for North London families, particularly travellers with roots in Sylhet, Dhaka and Chittagong. Trips typically involve weeks of extended family stays, home-cooked meals, weddings and travel between urban centres and rural villages. VFR travellers face higher risk than tourists because they eat and live like locals.

NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Rabies for almost every traveller, with Japanese Encephalitis added for monsoon-season rural stays and longer trips, and Cholera for high-risk rural areas or anyone planning humanitarian or relief work. Hepatitis B is recommended for longer or VFR stays and anyone considering medical or dental care.

Malaria is present in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the southeastern districts bordering Myanmar. Dhaka itself is low risk. The pharmacist will check your itinerary and prescribe an antimalarial if appropriate.

Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We see many VFR families from Kilburn, Cricklewood, Brondesbury and Hendon and complete most Bangladesh vaccine plans in a single 15 minute appointment.

Travel vaccines for Bangladesh, at a glance

Bangladesh is a high-volume VFR destination with extended family stays, monsoon flooding and rural travel. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Rabies for almost every traveller, with Japanese Encephalitis for monsoon-season rural stays and Cholera (Dukoral) for high-risk rural areas.

Hepatitis A and Typhoid

VFR family meals, weddings, home water sources and rural travel all raise the risk of food and waterborne illness. Hepatitis A protects for around 12 months from one dose (25 years with a booster). Typhoid (Typhim Vi®) protects for around 3 years. The two can be combined as Viatim® in a single injection.

Rabies

Bangladesh has significant rabies risk in dogs, with limited access to modern post-exposure care in rural areas. Pre-exposure vaccination (two doses on days 0 and 7) simplifies post-bite care substantially. Strongly recommended for children, longer stays and anyone travelling to Sylhet villages or the southeast.

Japanese Encephalitis

JE is transmitted by mosquitoes around rice paddies and pig farms, with risk highest in the monsoon season (June to October). NaTHNaC recommends the vaccine for stays of a month or more, or shorter rural visits during transmission season, particularly in the north, the haor wetlands and Sylhet region. Two doses on days 0 and 28.

Cholera

Cholera is endemic in parts of Bangladesh, particularly during monsoon flooding. The oral Dukoral vaccine is recommended for travellers heading to high-risk rural areas, those with reduced stomach acidity, or anyone working in humanitarian and relief settings. Two oral doses, 1 to 6 weeks apart, with the last dose at least 1 week before travel.

Malaria

Malaria risk in Bangladesh is mostly confined to the Chittagong Hill Tracts and adjacent districts bordering Myanmar. Dhaka and most northern districts are low risk. The pharmacist will check your itinerary against UKHSA maps and prescribe atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline or mefloquine if needed, plus written bite-avoidance advice.

When to come in

Ideally 4 to 6 weeks before departure, especially if you want the Rabies, JE or Cholera courses. Even 1 to 2 weeks before is worthwhile, the single-dose Hep A, Typhoid and first Hep B give meaningful early protection.
