Destination guide

Travelling to India? Here is what you need.

India is one of the UK's most-travelled destinations: the Golden Triangle, Goa, Kerala, Mumbai for business, the Himalayas for trekking, and a huge volume of VFR (visiting friends and relatives) travel. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Tetanus for almost all India travel, with Rabies strongly recommended for longer or rural trips. Malaria and dengue are present in many regions, advice depends on your itinerary.

India also requires a Yellow Fever certificate (ICVP) on arrival if you have been in a YF risk country in the previous six days, even on a stopover. If your route includes Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana or any other YF country, you will need that certificate before you board.

Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC-registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually fit you in same-week, vaccinate, write your malaria prescription, and, if needed, sign your Yellow Fever ICVP in one appointment.

Travel vaccines for India - at a glance

India is the UK's most-travelled long-haul destination. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus and Rabies for most travellers. Malaria advice depends on region and season. A Yellow Fever ICVP is required only if you have been in a YF risk country in the previous six days. Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157).

Hepatitis A + Typhoid

Standard for all India travel, including resort, business and VFR. Available as Viatim (combined, one injection) or separate vaccines. Hep A: 12 months from one dose, 25 years with booster. Typhoid: around 3 years per dose.

Rabies

India has one of the world's highest stray-dog populations and rabies kills tens of thousands of people there every year. NaTHNaC strongly recommends pre-exposure rabies vaccination for most India travellers, two doses on days 0 and 7. Especially important for children, backpackers, cyclists and long-stay travellers.

Tetanus / Diphtheria / Polio (Td/IPV)

A 10-year booster is the standard recommendation. We can give it in the same appointment.

Malaria

Risk varies by region: lower in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, the Himalayan foothills above 2,000m, and most beach resorts in Goa city centre. Higher in rural areas, Goa coastline at certain times of year, Kerala backwaters, Northeast India, and Andaman/Nicobar. The pharmacist will check your itinerary against NaTHNaC and prescribe atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline or mefloquine where appropriate, or confirm you do not need an antimalarial.
