Mongolia covers some of Asia's wildest landscapes: the Gobi desert with its dinosaur fossil beds and Bactrian camels, the taiga forests around Lake Khövsgöl on the Russian border, the great steppe and Naadam festival, plus Ulaanbaatar (UB) as the gateway. The combination of nomadic homestays, forest trekking and desert travel means a slightly unusual vaccine and bite avoidance conversation.
NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Hepatitis B and Rabies for most Mongolia itineraries. The standout for travellers heading into the northern forests (Khövsgöl, Khentii, the taiga zone) is Tick Borne Encephalitis (TBE), a viral infection spread by forest ticks during the warmer months. Plague is also documented in marmot populations in some western aimags; the pharmacist will brief you on practical bite and contact avoidance.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually fit you in same week and tailor the plan around your specific Gobi, steppe or forest itinerary.

Travel vaccines for Mongolia at a glance
Mongolia is not a Yellow Fever risk country, but a YF certificate is required if you are arriving from a YF risk country. NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Hepatitis B and Rabies for most travellers. Tick Borne Encephalitis is the standout for anyone heading into the northern forests in tick season.
Hepatitis A and Typhoid
Both are standard for Mongolia travel and can be given together as Viatim (one injection) or separately. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose (25 years with a booster); Typhoid protects for around 3 years. Worth having for any traveller eating at nomadic ger camps or in Ulaanbaatar street kitchens.
Hepatitis B
Recommended for longer trips, nomadic homestays, anyone likely to need medical or dental care, and adventure itineraries. Three dose schedule (days 0, 7 and 21 with the accelerated regimen, or 0, 1 and 6 months standard).
Rabies
Strongly recommended for Mongolia. Nomadic guard dogs are common at every ger, wolves are present, and rabies post exposure treatment is hard to access outside Ulaanbaatar. Pre exposure vaccination converts an emergency into a routine two dose top up. Two doses on days 0 and 7.
Tick Borne Encephalitis (TBE)
TBE is a viral infection spread by forest ticks. The risk zone in Mongolia is the northern taiga: Lake Khövsgöl, Khentii province, the forested borderlands with Russia. The risk season is roughly April to November. NaTHNaC recommends the vaccine for hikers, campers and anyone spending time in long grass or forest. Two doses give good protection for one season.
Plague + practical advice
Bubonic plague is documented in marmot populations in some western aimags. The risk to ordinary travellers is very low, but do not handle dead marmots or eat home cured marmot meat (boodog). The consultation includes practical bite and contact avoidance for ticks, dogs and wildlife.
