Papua New Guinea is one of the higher risk travel destinations in the Asia Pacific region, with significant variation between Port Moresby, the Highlands, the Sepik, the islands and remote village stays. Whether you are heading out for diving in Kimbe Bay, trekking the Kokoda Track, working with NGOs, or visiting family, the vaccine list is longer and more important than for most Pacific neighbours.
NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A and Typhoid as a baseline for almost all travellers, with Japanese Encephalitis for rural and longer trips, Rabies for trekkers, rural travellers and anyone working with animals or in remote areas, and Cholera (Dukoral) for adventurous travel, aid work or outbreak settings. Hepatitis B is worth considering for working trips or longer stays.
Malaria is widespread and year round across most of PNG below around 1,800m, including Port Moresby and the coast. Antimalarials are essential for almost every itinerary. The pharmacist will look at where you are going and recommend atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline or mefloquine. Yellow Fever is required for entry if you are arriving from a Yellow Fever risk country.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC aligned, GPhC registered pharmacy. We routinely handle higher risk Asia Pacific itineraries and can vaccinate, write malaria prescriptions and brief you on dengue, leptospirosis and personal safety in a single appointment. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC premises 1123406, Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157).

Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies
JE is recommended for rural travel, longer stays, and the wet season; the course is two doses of JE vaccine on days 0 and 28. Rabies is recommended for trekkers, rural travellers and anyone more than 24 hours from medical care; the pre exposure course is two doses of Rabies vaccine on days 0 and 7.
Cholera
Cholera outbreaks occur in PNG. Cholera (Dukoral) is an oral vaccine considered for adventurous travel, aid workers and anyone heading to outbreak areas. It is two doses, taken a week apart.
