Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. It can affect anyone, but is most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults.

Meningitis countries at risk
Meningitis is found worldwide. However the most risky areas are sub-Saharan Africa, known as the meningitis belt. The meningitis belt runs from Senegal in West Africa all the way to Ethiopia in the East Africa.
Signs and Symptoms
The initial symptoms of Meningitis can begin as soon as a few hours of being infected. Sufferers can experience the following common symptoms:
- A sudden arise of flu / fever like symptoms
- Intense headache
- Photophobia which is the intolerance of light
- Aches and pains
- Seizures
- A stiff neck
- Petechial rash which is little red blood spots under the skin
- Vomiting
Taking precautions from Meningitis
Meningitis can be contagious, therefore it is usually spread from activities such as; coughing, sneezing, kissing, sharing foods, toothbrushes and even sharing smoking activities. Reduce activities such as the ones states while maintaining a strict hygiene routine. Also ensure your immune system is staying strong by eating, sleeping and exercising well.
Prevention
Meningitis is preventable by having a vaccination, it will provide protection against the infection for up to 5 years. Meningitis is also treatable with antibiotics.
