The Esala Perahera, held annually in Kandy, Sri Lanka, is one of the most visually stunning and spiritually powerful festivals in South Asia. This 10-day event in July or August features processions of decorated elephants, traditional dancers, fire jugglers, and thousands of pilgrims honouring the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha.
If you’re planning to travel for this unforgettable spectacle, especially during Sri Lanka’s humid monsoon season, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring your health and comfort. Here’s what you need to know.
Know The Risks Before You Go

Recommended Vaccines
- Hepatitis A – spread through contaminated food and water
- Typhoid – particularly important if you’re eating local or street food
- Tetanus booster – for general travel
- Hepatitis B – recommended for longer stays or adventurous travel
- Rabies – consider if you plan to be in rural areas, or if interacting with animals (especially monkeys or dogs)
💡 Tip: Book your vaccination appointment 4–6 weeks before travel for best protection.

Mosquito Protection: Dengue & More
Although Sri Lanka is malaria-free, dengue fever is endemic, especially during the rainy season (May to September) — the same time as Esala Perahera.
- Use mosquito repellent with DEET or picaridin
- Wear long-sleeved clothing, especially in the evening
- Stay in accommodation with screens or air conditioning
- Avoid stagnant water where mosquitoes breed

Food & Water Safety
Street food is a big part of the experience during Perahera — but it’s also a common source of traveller’s diarrhoea.
- Eat food that’s freshly cooked and served hot
- Avoid raw salads or unpeeled fruits
- Drink only bottled water (ensure the seal is intact)
- Avoid ice in drinks and fresh juices from unknown sources
- Wash or sanitise hands regularly, especially before eating

Weather & Heat Tips
Esala Perahera takes place during Sri Lanka’s monsoon season in the central highlands. Expect warm, humid days (25–30°C), frequent rain showers and crowds with long outdoor waits.
- Wear lightweight, breathable clothes
- Bring a waterproof poncho or umbrella
- Apply sunscreen & insect repellent
- Bring rehydration salts in case of dehydration

Access to Medical Care
Kandy has several hospitals and clinics, but they can be crowded during the festival. Bring a travel first aid kit with:
- Antidiarrhoeal medication
- Paracetamol or ibuprofen
- Antihistamines
- Hand sanitiser
- Plasters, antiseptic wipes
- Any personal prescriptions

Cultural Etiquette & Respect
This is a deeply sacred Buddhist festival, so it’s important to show cultural sensitivity:
- Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees)
- Remove shoes when entering temples
- Don’t touch religious statues or offerings
- Ask before photographing people or religious sites
