Madagascar is unlike anywhere else: lemurs and chameleons in Andasibe and Ranomafana, the baobab avenues near Morondava, the limestone tsingy of Bemaraha, and Antananarivo as the chaotic, hill-built capital where most trips begin. It is a serious wildlife and adventure destination and travel times are long, so most UK visitors plan two to three week trips.
From a travel-health point of view, Madagascar needs proper preparation. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are standard for everyone. Rabies is strongly recommended because rural medical care is limited and you may be days from a hospital. Hepatitis B is sensible for longer stays, healthcare exposure or any tattoo and piercing plans. Malaria is a year-round risk across most of the country, especially the lowlands and coastal areas, so you will need a prescription antimalarial.
Yellow Fever is required for entry if you are arriving from a YF risk country, which catches travellers coming in from Kenya, Tanzania or other African legs. There have been recent plague outbreaks in some seasons; the pharmacist will brief you on bite-avoidance and current alerts.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC-registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). Same-week appointments and a single 15 minute slot usually covers vaccines, malaria prescription and any ICVP requirement.

Travel vaccines for Madagascar, at a glance
NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Rabies for most travellers to Madagascar, with Hepatitis B for longer stays. Malaria prophylaxis is needed for almost all itineraries. Yellow Fever is required for entry if you are arriving from a YF risk country.
Hep A, Typhoid and Hep B
Hepatitis A and Typhoid are standard and can be given as combined Viatim. Hepatitis B is sensible for stays over a month, any healthcare exposure or planned tattoos and piercings.
Rabies
Strongly recommended. Stray and feral dogs are common, lemur encounters happen on trekking days, and rural post-exposure treatment is unreliable. The two-dose pre-exposure course on days 0 and 7 makes any bite much simpler to manage.
Malaria
Year round risk across most of Madagascar, especially the coastal lowlands. The pharmacist will prescribe atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline or mefloquine and brief you on bite-avoidance.
