The Philippines is a sprawling archipelago of 7,000 islands: world-class diving in Palawan and Cebu, whale sharks in Donsol, the colonial heritage of Manila and Vigan, and the rice terraces of Banaue. It is also one of the most rabies-endemic countries in Asia, with stray dog populations on almost every island. Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Rabies are standard NaTHNaC recommendations for almost all travellers, with Japanese Encephalitis recommended for rural and longer trips.
Malaria risk is present in some rural areas of Palawan and Mindanao, and dengue fever is a year-round risk across the country, particularly during and after the rainy season (June to November). The pharmacist will discuss bite avoidance, antimalarials where needed, and the new Qdenga dengue vaccine for previously infected travellers.
Aqua Travel Clinic in West Hampstead is a GPhC-registered travel vaccination service. The clinic is operated by Aqua Pharmacy (GPhC-registered premises 1123406, owned by Naspram Pharma Limited) under Superintendent Pharmacist Sanjay Mukundkumar Patel (GPhC 2045157). We can usually fit you in same-week, review your itinerary, and complete your vaccinations in a single appointment.

Travel vaccines for the Philippines, at a glance
NaTHNaC recommends Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Rabies for almost all Philippines travellers, with Japanese Encephalitis for rural travel. The Philippines is one of Asia's most rabies-endemic countries, so pre-exposure rabies is strongly advised, particularly for island-hopping, beach trips and children. Dengue is a year-round risk; the Qdenga vaccine is now available for previously infected travellers.
Hepatitis A and Typhoid
Both are standard for the Philippines and can be given together as Viatim (one injection) or separately. Hep A protects for around 12 months from a single dose (25 years with a booster); Typhoid protects for around 3 years. Food and water hygiene is variable across the islands, and even resort travellers eating fresh seafood are at risk.
Rabies, strongly recommended
The Philippines has one of the highest rates of human rabies in Asia, with stray dog populations on almost every island. Post-exposure treatment can require evacuation from remote islands, and rabies immunoglobulin is often unavailable outside major cities. Pre-exposure vaccination (two doses on days 0 and 7) is strongly recommended for almost all travellers, particularly children, cyclists, runners and anyone planning to be more than 24 hours from a major hospital.
Japanese Encephalitis
JE is a mosquito-borne viral infection found in rural and rice-growing regions of the Philippines. The risk is year-round but peaks during the rainy season (June to November). The vaccine is recommended for travellers spending a month or more in rural areas, or shorter trips with significant rural exposure. Two doses on days 0 and 28; accelerated schedule available.
Dengue fever and the Qdenga vaccine
Dengue is endemic and a year-round risk across the country. Bite avoidance with DEET, long sleeves and air-conditioned accommodation is the cornerstone of prevention. The new Qdenga vaccine is now available in the UK and is recommended for travellers with a confirmed prior dengue infection. The pharmacist can discuss eligibility.
Malaria and other considerations
Malaria is present in some rural areas of Palawan and Mindanao below 600m, particularly outside main resort areas. The pharmacist will check your itinerary and prescribe antimalarials if needed. We also check that your Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio and MMR are up to date.
